Pheynyl dextran is also known as Phenoxy dextran, DexP, phenoxy-derivatized dextran or 1-Phenoxy-2-hydroxypropyl dextran. The phenyl content as determined by absorbance is 16.1% (as phenyl glycidyl content w/w). This level of substitution corresponds one phenyl residue for every five glucose units in the dextran chain. The product is water soluble but requires prolonged stirring. The product is made from dextran 40. Phenyl dextrans may be used in the preparation of hydrophobic gels and also hydrophobic coatings. This range of products will be extended to provide different molecular weights and also different degrees of substitution.
